General Information

What is a Labradoodle? A Labradoodle is a mixed breed whose parentage includes but is not limited to the Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Labradoodles can range in size, colour and most importantly coat type. Labradoodles often have great temperments and happy-go-lucky personalities which is inherited from both the Labrador lines and the Poodle lines. Labradoodles can range from low shedding to non-shedding (as non-shedding as a dog can be).

F1, F1b, F2…What does this mean? Breeders, Canine Professionals, and Veterinarians often use these terms in reference to not only Labradoodles but other breeds as well. If you’re not sure what they mean for your dog or puppies you may be considering, here is a brief overview:

F1 = Cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, this creates a “First Generation.” Generally the straight cross between Labrador Retriever and Poodle creates low shedding offspring that may have long straight hair, wispy hair, and in some cases coarse but wavy hair.

F1b = Cross between an F1 Labradoodle and a Poodle, this creates almost a “Generation and a Half” cross. You may hear of this particular cross being called an F2. Certainly, F1b’s are the second generation but often this cross still has some variation in coat. Offspring may be extremely low to non-shedders and often have either a crimpy coat or moderately curly coat. Note: F1 Labradoodles may also be bred back to the Labrador Retriever to create an F1b, however this cross is *not* recommended as it is counter-productive to the evolution of the Labradoodles coat. These crosses may still be called F1b’s though.

F2 = Cross between an F1b and a Poodle. Can also be a cross between F1b and F1b, however this cross may not generate fleecey coated Labradoodles. F2’s are often bred to one another to create Multigenerational Labradoodles in order to obtain somewhat of a breed standard with little variation. F2 Offspring may be extremely low shedding to non-shedders (as non-shedding as a dog can be) and often have a fleecey and wavy or moderately curly coat.

F3 = Cross between an F2 and a Poodle. This cross is not recommended as it introduces too much Poodle to the lines. F3 Labradoodles often have extremely curly coats and have less of the Labrador Retriever features, leaving them looking almost identical to a Poodle.

What coat type do *your* Labradoodles have? At the moment we breed F1b Petite Labradoodles. This means that our F1 Miniature Labradoodle stud has bred one of our Miniature Poodle girls, resulting in the F1b, a backcross to one of the parent breeds. Our puppies generally develop moderately low to non-shedding coats (as non-shedding as a dog can be) and often have crimpy coats, some develop curly coats. Although the F1b is the result of a backcross to the Poodle parent breed, it does not guarantee there will not be variation within the litter in coat type.
